August 2013-December 2014
Chisenhale Gallery presents Dome, the culmination of Propeller’s eight-month research and design project resulting in the site-specific mural they have painted at the Skatepark in Victoria Park. Since January 2013, Propeller have taken part in a series of workshops investigating modernist abstraction, geometry and utopian architecture facilitated by the project’s co-ordinator, Alessandra Ferrini. The group produced a series of collages, which provided the basis for their experimentations with large-scale painting and their final collaborative design for the mural. Dome aims to create links between the concrete Skatepark, the park’s natural environment and it’s surrounding East End landscape.
The mural is located at the Skatepark in the Eastern Hub of Victoria Park adjacent to The Hub Building and the children’s playground and viewable during Park opening hours.
The launch event on Wednesday 28 August, 5-7pm organised by Propeller members was accompanied by an open-mic session with music and poetry. The evening included musical performances by Yulia Spirina and Alisha Kadir and poetry by Lexia Tomlinson, all of whom are based in Birmingham. Indigo Williams, a poet from South London performed a selection of works to close the event. All performers were invited to contribute by Propeller member Mesha Reid.
Indigo Williams is a poet and spoken word educator from South London. She was the winner of New Generation Slam 2012 and has performed at Tedx Brixton, The Royal Shakespeare Company, BBC Radio 4 Bespoken Word and Glastonbury Festival. Find out more about William's practice here.
