João Florêncio, Lecturer in History of Modern and Contemporary Art and Visual Culture at University of Exeter, explores the political and aesthetic value of refusing a ‘poetics of spectacularity’ when engaging with illness. Drawing from Alex Baczynski-Jenkins’ new work at Chisenhale Gallery and speaking from a position ‘beside’ the binary of health and malady, Florêncio examines the dull moments of illness, the unremarkable symptoms that signal its presence in our ordinary lives.
