Please join us this Thursday 14 September, 6.30-8.30pm for the opening of Hannah Black’s exhibition, Some Context, a new commission and the artist’s first solo exhibition in a UK institution. Some Context is structured around 20,000 copies of The Situation, a book made up of transcribed, edited and censored conversations between the artist and friends about ‘the situation’. This theme is interpreted differently in each conversation. The books provide the stuffing – in shredded form – for the ‘transitional objects’ also displayed in the space, and will be shredded at the end of the exhibition. Some Context gestures towards the various potential uses of art’s uselessness – as comfort, as worship, as text and as archive. To find out more about the exhibition, please click here.
As part of the commissioning process, a programme of events has been devised in collaboration with Hannah Black. This includes a series of conversations in which participants have been invited to discuss a situation of their choice. For more information on all of the events, please click here.
A reading list of texts, books and articles has been compiled in collaboration with Hannah Black to accompany her exhibition, Some Context, at Chisenhale Gallery. This resource expands on ideas raised through Black’s new commission. Included is previous writing by Black, such as her publications Dark Pool Party (DOMINICA/Arcadia Missa, 2016) and Life, with Juliana Huxtable, (mumok, 2017); essays and books that provide reference and further context to the work; and a selection of writings by contributors to The Situation (2017). Congratulations to Chisenhale programme alumni Rachel Whiteread for her retrospective exhibition at Tate Britain, opening tonight. We would also like to congratulate Chisenhale programme alumni Celine Condorelli for her inclusion in Sharjah Biennial 13, Tamawuj, Act II.
