Create Residency Chisenhale Gallery Create Residency February 2016 – June 2017
Luke Willis Thompson is the Chisenhale Gallery Create Residency artist for 2016 -17. The residency is part of Chisenhale’s Offsite programme and is produced in partnership with Create. For his residency, Thompson takes the gallery’s location in east London, and the riots that took place in London, 2011, as point of departure to develop an ambitious new body of work. The residency culminates in a major solo exhibition by Thompson at Chisenhale in June 2017.
Luke Willis Thompson’s work takes place within specific social contexts, often challenging traditional forms of exhibition making. By choosing sites of historical, political or social trauma, Thompson raises pertinent issues around race, class and social inequality within his work.
Luke Willis Thompson (b. 1988 Auckland) lives and works in London. Selected solo exhibitions include Sucu Mate/Born Dead, Hopkinson Mossman, Auckland (2016); and Misadventure, IMA, Brisbane (2016).
