Over the last three decades Linder has had a prolific output across myriad forms and has consistently questioned roles of gender identity and commodification in society. Part of the late 1970s and early 1980s Manchester punk and post punk scenes, Linder is well known for her photomontages, such as her artwork on the cover of the 1977 Buzzcocks single Orgasm Addict and recent performances based on a range of collaged material and ideas. For Chisenhale Gallery Linder has created a new edition which takes a found image from a 1970’s pornographic magazine, over which Linder has collaged images of cakes, making each print in the series unique.
Linder’s Chisenhale edition was produced in conjunction with her recent commission at Chisenhale Gallery in July 2010, entitled The Darktown Cakewalk: Celebrated from the House of FAME . The thirteen-hour performance event, produced in collaboration with musician Stuart McCallum (The Cinematic Orchestra), fashion designer Richard Nicoll (also Creative Director, Cerruti) and dancers and musicians from varied traditions and disciplines, unfolded as an epic invocation of glamour and fantastical pageantry. Witch trials and beauty queens, ragtime and Euro Pop merged as live collage enfolding the viewer in a secret history of prejudice and dissent.
Linder was born in 1954 in Liverpool. A new solo show by Linder will open in 2011 at Stuart Shave/Modern Art. Recent solo shows include Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow (2010), Baltic, Gateshead (2007) and PS1/Museum of Modern Art, New York (2007). Group shows include Rencontres d'Arles Photographie (Arles, France 2010), The Dark Monarch (Tate St. Ives, Cornwall, 2009), After Twilight (Kolnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, 2009), Crossroads (Salamanca Insitute of Culture, Salamanca, 2008), and Punk. No One is Innocent (Kunsthalle Vienna, 2008). Linder's work is included in the Tate collection.
