Chisenhale Gallery presents a very special limited edition by Mark Leckey, the fourth in our annual series of ‘Archive Editions’.

With ‘Archive Editions’, Chisenhale Gallery works with artists who have participated in the gallery’s historic programme and who now kindly donate a new work to raise funds to realise the gallery’s artistic programme and support the next generation of pioneering artists. In 2011 the inaugural ‘Archive Edition’ was produced by Wolfgang Tillmans, followed by editions produced by Rachel Whiteread in 2012 and Hilary Lloyd in 2013.

Mark Leckey participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s 21st Century programme in 2010, presenting an in-conversation event with writer Tom McCarthy. He served as a Trustee of Chisenhale Gallery between 2012 and 2015.

Since the late 1990s, when he first presented the seminal work Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), Mark Leckey’s dynamic and varied output has made a significant impact and continues to be an important influence on the work of a new generation of artists in the UK and internationally. Through his videos, installations and live performances, Leckey explores the relationship of cultural artefacts to human subjectivity and the production of desire. He re-animates the things around us – objects, images, characters and brands – to examine the iconography of popular culture and its affective pull. Leckey’s Turner Prize award in 2008 and subsequent high profile institutional solo exhibitions, including the Serpentine Gallery, London (2011); the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2012); and the major survey currently on view at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels (until January 2015) have confirmed his status amongst the most important artists working today. This special limited edition celebrates Mark Leckey’s significant contribution to Chisenhale Gallery and our wider artistic community.

Titled Grasping & Gasping (Pylons & Nylons and Hooves & Hands and Benson & Hedges) this exclusive limited edition is a diptych comprising a giclee print overlaid with two images silkscreened onto acetate.

Background images are collaged from stock photography – electricity pylons and fishnet tights sourced online – and juxtaposed with Benson & Hedges advertising from the 1980s. The adverts, found in magazines, feature the iconic gold cigarette pack in a series of surreal settings, devoid of words and people, in which the object embodies a set of characteristics, behaviour or style. Printed on acetate, with reference to traditional animation techniques, pairs of disembodied cartoon hands and hooves grasp at the surface of the image below.

Mark Leckey was born in Birkenhead in 1964. He studied at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic. He lives and works in London.

Leckey’s exhibition history since the early 2000s includes solo exhibitions at many major international galleries and museums including WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels, Belgium (2014); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA; Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada (2012); the Serpentine Gallery, London, UK (2011); Milton Keynes Gallery, Milton Keynes, UK (2010); Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, Germany (2009); Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2007); Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany (2005); and Migros Museum, Zurich, Switzerland (2003). Leckey recently curated the travelling exhibition The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things for Hayward Gallery Touring across multiple UK venues in 2012-13. In 2015 he will present a major solo retrospective at Haus der Kunst Munich, Germany.

His work has also been included in numerous important international exhibitions, including Il Palazzo Enciclopedico / The Encyclopedic Palace, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy and the Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (both 2013); Ghosts in the Machine, New Museum, New York, USA (2012); 10,000 Lives, Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju, South Korea (2010); Moving Images: Artists & Video/Film, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (2010); Playing Homage, Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery, Canada; Sympathy for the Devil, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, USA (2007); Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul, Turkey (2005); and Manifesta 5, European Biennial of Contemporary Art, San Sebastián, Spain (2004).
