Thurston Moore

Paperback, colour illustrations, pp 24

Root is an ambitious collaborative project which came about when Jon Tye of Lo Recordings solicited Thurston Moore to record some guitar parts for a proposed remix project. Moore sent a tape containing thirty one-minute guitar pieces.

When this project failed to materialise, Tye was determined to put Moore’s work to good use. Communicating almost entirely by fax, a dialogue between Tye and Moore resulted in the idea of ‘conversions / transformations’ project. In order to fully exploit the potential of this idea, Tye enlisted the services of designer John Forss and contemporary art venture commercial too. Each track was one hundred artists & musicians under the premise that they would each create a new piece using Moore’s improvisations as a foundation.

The response was as overwhelming as it was diverse - many artists were keen, not only to produce a visual piece, but also to experiment with sound. . While at the same time, musicians channelled their energies into creating an array of visual pieces.

Root has turned out to be an extraordinary and eclectic cross-pollination of creativity. The exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery showcases the work produced so far - most of the sound pieces are released either on CD or as a five-pieces vynil box set - other releases re planned for 1999.
