A panel discussion exploring Flatness, an ongoing research project engaging with the screen based image and immaterial culture after the Internet, initiated by curator, Shama Khanna. Khanna will be joined by researcher and writer Mercedes Bunz; Marianne Forrest, from London-based artists-run space, Auto Italia; and chair, Amy Budd, Chisenhale Gallery's Exhibitions and Events Trainee.
The event coincides with the publication of the book Flatness, featuring a selection of texts and artworks from flatness.eu, an online exhibition space and research resource edited by Khanna, which includes contributions by artists, writers, programmers and computer specialists engaging with the possibilities and limitations of the web as a creative site and space for viewing.
Marianne Forrest is an artist and curator. Since 2011 she has been involved in organising projects through the London based artist-led organisation Auto Italia. Recent exhibitions include Recent Work By Artists, Auto Italia (2013,) Upcoming exhibitions, ABC Berlin, (2013) Immaterial Labour Isn’t Working, Auto Italia (2013), My Skin Is At War With A World Of Data, Lido Projects and Artissima (both 2012) Auto Italia LIVE, ICA, London, (2012). She is currently curating a touring exhibition of Auto Italia's work for CIC Cairo which will open in November 2013.
Dr. Mercedes Bunz is a university researcher and journalist, and lives in London and Lüneburg. She currently heads the Hybrid Publishing Lab of the Leuphana University, and has previously studied at the Free University of Berlin and Bauhaus University Weimar. She has been the technology reporter for The Guardian, the online editor-in-chief of the Berlin based newspaper Tagesspiegel and in 1997 co-founded DEBUG, a monthly magazine for electronic aspects of life. Her forthcoming book The Silent Revolution. How algorithms change knowledge, work, public, and politics without making to much noise will be published with Palgrave Macmillan.
Shama Khanna is an independent curator and writer based in London. She curated the thematic programme at Oberhausen International Short Film Festival 2013, entitled Flatness: Cinema after the Internet which she developed into the online resource flatness.eu. She has previously worked with Showroom Gallery, E:vent and LUX / ICA Biennial of Moving Images in London, amongst other collaborations. She is a regular contributor to Frieze and Art Review magazines and is a visiting tutor at Bournemouth Arts University and Chelsea College, University of the Arts, London.
