Physically devised on site over the 10 days prior to its performance, Interim borrows the title of the series for which it was commissioned and attempts to make content of this nothing that might be what is otherwise in-between: it is a framed exchange between two people, provoked by the reframing of the thing that comes before or after as being the event itself; the difference between or coincidence of at least two practices and the using of these things (or each other) as the means to work some other things through (for the sake of what is to come, from what has happened before, together or separately so). It points somewhere. Something is marked. Like a sketch, or a drawing board, or the discovery of a limit.
As a curator Ian White has shown the videos of Emily Roysdon numerous times, including screenings at Whitechapel Gallery and LUX28, London, Office for Contemporary Art, Oslo, the International Short Film Festival, Oberhausen and most recently a series of still images as part of Kopietheater at this year's Berlinale. In 2009 Emily Roysdon invited Ian White as an artist to participate in the exhibition Ecstatic Resistance which she curated for Grand Arts, Kansas City and X Initiative, New York. Interim is the first collaboration between Ian White and Emily Roysdon in which both appear as artists. As such it is both part of a continuiing interest and public expression as well as a new set of questions, not all of which might be answered, but opened.
Emily Roysdon (1977) is a New York and Stockholm based interdisciplinary artist and writer. Her work is invested in language, memory, collectivity and the processes of history and she uses video, photography, text and performance to that aim. She is editor and co-founder of the queer feminist journal and artist collective LTTR. Roysdon's work has been shown at Participant Inc. (NY); Generali Foundation (Vienna); New Museum (NY): Power Plant (Toronto); and Studio Voltaire (London). Her videos have been screened at Whitechapel Gallery (London); Arsenal: Institut fur Film and Videokunst (Berlin); The Kitchen (NY); and at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. Her writings have been published in numerous books and magazines, including Cabinet Magazine, the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, and Women in Performance: a Journal of Feminist Theory. Roysdon completed the Whitney Museum of Independent Study Program in 2001 and an Interdisciplinary MFA at UCLA in 2006. For six months in 2008 she was resident at the International Artists Studio Program in Sweden (IASPIS). She is a recipient of a 2008 Art Matters grant and the 2009 Franlin Furnace grant and she is a contriubting member and sometimes performer with the band MEN.
Ian White is Adjunct Film Curator at Whitechapel Gallery, London and also works on independent projects. He is a writer and artist working predominantly in performance. Previous curatorial projects include Kinomuseum, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, 2007; The Secret Public (Associate Curator; Kunstverein Munich, Institute of Contemporary Art, London, The British School at Rome Gallery, 2006/7) and The Artists Cinema (Coordinator; Frieze Art Fair, London 2005/6). He is co-editor of Kinomuseum: Towards an artists' cinema and has written for numerous publications including Frieze, Afterall, Art Review, Art Monthly and The Wire. His essay on Gerry Schum appears in Afterthought; new writing on conceptual art (ed. Mike Sperlinger). He is the facilitator of the LUX Associate Artists Programme. As an artist he has performed at Tate Britain, ICA and Tate Modern in London, STUK, Belgium, De Appel, Amsterdam and tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin amongst others. He has made two major collaborations with Jimmy Robert, performing Yvonne Rainer's Trio A with him and Pat Catterson at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in March 2009. A trilogy of his solo works - Ibiza Black Flags Democracy - will be presented at the DAAD Galerie, Berlin in July 2010.
