Banu Cennetoğlu’s work incorporates methods of mapping, collecting and archiving in order to question and challenge the politics of memory, as well as the distribution and consumption of information. For her commission at Chisenhale Gallery, Cennetoğlu has produced a new moving image installation, mapping her archive of digital images and videos sourced over the past twelve years.
CATALOG 2009 is a limited edition artist’s book, produced by Cennetoğlu in 2009 as part of her contribution to the Pavilion of Turkey at the Venice Biennale in 2009. Originally produced to function as a mail-order catalogue presented at the pavilion, the book comprises 450 photographs from the artist’s personal archive. The images document various spaces and are classified in fifteen categories such as ‘caution’, ‘vanity’ and ‘replacement’. The book also details coded access to an online image bank of the featured photographs. During the biennale viewers were invited to use the code to download selected images for free. This exclusive offer was only valid until 22 November 2009, the last day of the 53rd Venice Biennale. Presented in parallel with Cennotoglu’s new moving image work at Chisenhale Gallery, CATALOG 2009 further explores her interest in the production, accumulation and distribution of images.
Banu Cennetoğlu has kindly donated five editions of CATALOG 2009 to Chisenhale Gallery. All funds raised through the sale of the work will directly support Chisenhale Gallery’s artistic programme.
