Chisenhale Gallery presents a special limited edition artwork by Caragh Thuring, as part of the gallery’s Archive Editions series.

Working with artists who have participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s programme, Archive Editions are new works, donated by the artists to raise funds to realise the gallery’s artistic programme and support the next generation of pioneering artists.

Through her paintings, Thuring recycles and repositions imagery examining open-ended narratives and the speed at which images are consumed. In 2014, Chisenhale Gallery presented a new body of paintings by Thuring, which explored pertinent questions surrounding contemporary image making, asking exactly how much information is required to satisfy intention and how this contributes to the generation of meaning.

Thuring’s new edition for Chisenhale Gallery, Snake Wall, 2018, comprises a silhouette of a submarine, hand painted by the artist onto a bespoke woven fabric. The brick design of the cloth is a digital reworking by Thuring of an earlier painting, Brick Lady (2013) reconstructed on a loom. With image built into the surface before paint is added, the fabric wraps around the stretchers’ edge, further acknowledging the edition’s three-dimensional presence. The submarine is disruptive and mysterious, alluding to what is beyond but can’t fully be seen or understood. As such, Snake Wall becomes an incomplete story, with an enigmatic logic.

Caragh Thuring (b. 1972) lives and works in London. Solo exhibitions include: Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco (2018); Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2016); Simon Preston Gallery, New York (2015) and Chisenhale Gallery, London (2014). Selected group exhibitions include: Criminal Orientation, Attenborough Arts Centre, then touring. Virginia Woolf, An exhibition inspired by her writings, Tate St Ives, Cornwall; touring to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (all 2018); Voyage, Galeria Bergamin & Gomide, São Paulo (2017); Call and Response, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York (2015) and Woman’s Art Society II, MOSTYN, Llandudno (2015).

Caragh Thuring is represented by Thomas Dane, London and Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco.
