Chisenhale Gallery presents a special limited edition artwork by Josephine Pryde, as part of the gallery’s Archive Editions series.

The Archive Editions series comprises new limited edition works, kindly donated by artists who have participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s historic exhibitions programme. Funds raised from the sales of these works contribute to the gallery’s artistic programme and support the next generation of pioneering artists.

Josephine Pryde works primarily with photography to address the nature of image making and methods of display and reception. In her work, Pryde often references the history of both commercial and fine art photography and the impact of technological advancements in imaging. For her 2011 Chisenhale Gallery exhibition Pryde produced a new body of photographic work that looked at issues relating to the reproduction of images, their political currency and intellectual value, as well as the impact of new imaging processes on debates around subjecthood and women’s rights.

Pryde’s new edition for Chisenhale Gallery, Freshly Cut Grass, May Blossom, Stinging Nettles, Bluebells and Lady's Bedstraw, Picked in the Spring and Exposed in the Darkroom (2019), is a photogram depicting the word ‘SHAME’, drawn by the artist with fresh cut flowers and grasses. The title directly describes the edition’s production process, and continues Pryde’s ongoing work with photograms. The edition exploits the immediacy of an analogue photographic technique using light to fix images of fresh spring plants that spell out a supposedly negative emotion, evoking a sense of smell and touch in connection to the words. The reconfiguration of these elements reflects Pryde’s intent to question, to experience and to live with, and through, a perpetually recurring emotional state.

Josephine Pryde (b. 1967) lives and works in London and Berlin. Solo exhibitions include In Case My Mind Is Changing, Simon Lee, London, UK (2018); lapses in Thinking By the person i Am, CCA Wattis Institute of Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, travelling to Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, PA (2015); Miss Austen Enjoys Photography, Kunstverein Düsseldorf, Germany; Miss Austen Still Enjoys Photography, Kunsthalle Bern (both 2012) and Embyros and Estate Agents: L’Art de Vivre, Chisenhale Gallery, London (2011). Selected group shows include New Order: Art and Technology in the Twenty-First Century, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2019); Atelier E.B: Passer-by, Serpentine Sackler Gallery, London (2018); and Turner Prize, Tate Britain, London (2016).
