Chisenhale Gallery presents a special limited edition artwork by Lubaina Himid, as part of the gallery's Archive Editions series.

The Archive Editions series comprises new limited edition works, kindly donated by artists who have participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s historic exhibitions programme. Funds raised from the sales of these works contribute to the gallery’s artistic programme and support the next generation of pioneering artists.

Himid works with painting, drawing, printmaking and installation to explore cultural history, race and identity. Since the 1980s, Himid has had an active role in the UK’s Black Art movement, whilst her bold and politically charged work continues to champion marginalised narratives to encourage conversation and change. Further to her practice as an artist, Himid is a curator and professor of contemporary art. In 1989 Chisenhale Gallery presented Himid’s first solo exhibition The Ballad of the Wing, featuring painting and sculpture.

Himid’s new edition for Chisenhale Gallery, The sweet sharp taste of limes (2018), forms part of her kanga series and continues her interest in textiles from East Africa. The kanga is a multi-coloured fabric often designed with a patterned border and a motto and is worn by women and occasionally men from the region. As the daughter of a textile designer from Zanzibar, Himid’s personal history is ever-present in this body of work. Comprising vibrant colours, patterns and botanical elements this new edition includes a quote from a love poem by Audre Lorde which also forms the title of the work. Through combining poetry and kanga motifs, the edition becomes the starting point for a dialogue between personhood and ownership, reflecting on post-colonial representation and the resonance of black history.

Lubaina Himid (b. 1954, Zanzibar) lives and works in Preston, UK where she is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire. In 2017 she was awarded the Turner Prize. Recent solo exhibitions include Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston; Meticulous observations and Naming the Money, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (both in 2018); Navigation Charts, Spike Island, Bristol (2017); Plan B, Tate St Ives, St Ives (1999) and The Ballad of the Wing, Chisenhale Gallery, London (1989). Selected group exhibitions include: Glasgow International, BALTIC, Gateshead and the 10th Berlin Biennale (all 2018); The Place is Here, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and South London Gallery, London; (both 2017); Burning down the house, Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2014) and Thin Black Line(s), Tate Britain, London (2011).
