Chisenhale Gallery presents a very special limited edition by Rachel Whiteread, the second in our annual series of ‘Archive Editions’.
‘Archive Editions’ works with artists who have participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s historic exhibition programme at pivotal points in their career and who now kindly donate their work to raise funds to realise the gallery’s artistic programme and support the next generation of pioneer artists. In 2011 the inaugural ‘Archive Edition’ was produced by Wolfgang Tillmans.
Rachel Whiteread made an exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery in 1990. This was Whiteread’s first major solo exhibition in a public gallery in the UK. She was subsequently commissioned by Artangel to produce House in 1993
and was awarded the Turner Prize the same year. Whiteread continues to have a prolific exhibition history and is recognised as one of the world’s leading contemporary artists.
For her exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery Whiteread produced Ghost (1990), a solid negative cast of the entire inside of a room from a Victorian terraced house. Bearing traces of all the architectural features and transplanted into the gallery, the work becomes a room within a room, with all its memories and events sealed anonymously inside it.
Installation of Ghost (1990-2012) depicts the work as a series of images laid out in the style of a classic photographers’ ‘contact sheet’. Composed by Whiteread from original slide film documentation, the images trace her process of re-production. The presence of armatures, assistants, ladders and the artist give an intimate insight into the creation of the now legendary sculpture, while the patina of the film stock reveals the atmospheric material qualities of the photographic image itself.
Whiteread says of the work and her exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery:
“In 1989 I was a baby artist with an idea for a big sculpture. The art world was a daunting place. Chisenhale Gallery put their faith in me and I made Ghost, a work that I am deeply proud of which now after a number of different owners resides in The Washington National Gallery in the USA.
I am personally indebted to Chisenhale Gallery for the risks it takes in launching artists that work on the periphery and enabling them to make works on a scale which was previously out of bounds to them, which in turn opens up countless possibilities. Long may this continue…”
Rachel Whiteread was born in London in 1963. She studied at Brighton Polytechnic and the Slade School of Fine Art. She lives and works in London.
Whiteread’s exhibition history since 1987 includes solo exhibitions at many major international galleries and museums including Tate Britain; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo; Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Kunsthalle Basel; ICA Philadelphia; ICA Boston and MCA Chicago. She has participated in Documenta, the Venice, Sydney and Istanbul Biennials and the Carnegie International. Whiteread’s public commissions include Water Tower, Public Art Fund, New York; the Holocaust Memorial, the Judenplatz, Vienna; the Fourth Plinth Trafalgar Square, London; The Unilever Series, Tate Modern, London; The Gran Boathouse, Norway; and most recently the permanent public commission on the façade of the
Whitechapel Gallery, London.
