Ruth Ewan has created a new limited edition print for Chisenhale Gallery marking the realisation of her offsite commission Dreadnoughts (July 2010) and the culmination of her year-long residency in three Tower Hamlets’ secondary schools, exploring the radical history of East London.

The limited edition brings together nine small drawings, by four Year Eight boys from St Paul's Way School, on found cigarette cards from the early 20th century collected by Ruth Ewan. Taking inspiration from Sylvia Pankhurst's transformation of a local pub, The Gunmakers' Arms, into a nursery known as The Mothers' Arms in 1914, the boys were invited to apply the same pacifist logic to a series of images of warships.

Ruth Ewan is a Scottish artist based in London. Her work has been shown as part of Weighted Words, Zabludowicz Collection, London; A million Miles from Home, Folkestone Triennial, Folkestone; The Human Pattern, Kunstall Olso (all 2011); Art Sheffield (2010), Frieze Projects; Altermodern: Tate Triennial and Younger Than Jesus, New Museum, New York (all 2009). Recent solo exhibitions and projects include Billboard for Edinburgh, Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (2012); Brank & Heckle, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee (2011); Dreadnoughts, Chisenhale Gallery, London (2010); El nuestro es el mundo a pedar de todos, Kiosko Galeria, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia (2009); A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World, Ancient and Modern, London (2009); Fang Sang, ICA, London (2008) and Did You Kiss the Foot that Kicked You?, Artangel, London (2007).
