Chisenhale Gallery presents a special limited edition artwork by Sonia Boyce, as part of the gallery’s Archive Editions series.

The Archive Editions series comprises new limited edition works, kindly donated by artists who have participated in Chisenhale Gallery’s historic exhibitions programme. Funds raised from the sales of these works contribute to the gallery’s artistic programme and support the next generation of pioneering artists.

Sonia Boyce works with a variety of media, such as drawing, print, photography, video, sound and performance. Through her practice she explores critical and contextual debates surrounding issues on race, gender and cultural differences. In 1988 her work was featured in Essential Black Art, a pivotal group exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, curated by artist Rasheed Araeen.

Boyce’s new edition for Chisenhale Gallery, I’m With Her Too (2019), references a found placard from the New York Women’s march in response to the results of the 2016 United States presidential election. The edition includes the written statement ‘I’m with her’ as a call for solidarity, celebrating the positive energy generated in movements of social and collective action. The print maps hand-drawn arrows that point outwards and beyond the edge of the margins of the paper, giving a sense of infinity. I’m With Her Too (2019) continues Boyce’s interest in rallying a sense of the social, in order to connect the viewer with the potential for change.

Sonia Boyce (b. 1962) lives and works in London. She is Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. In 2016 she was elected as a Royal Academician and in 2019 she was awarded an OBE for her services to art. Solo exhibitions include Sonia Boyce, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester (2018); We move in her way, ICA, London (2017); Paper Tiger Whisky Soap Theatre (Dada Nice), Villa Arson, Nice (2016); Scat – Sound and Collaboration, Iniva, Rivington Place, London (2013); Like Love – Part One, as well as Part Two and Part Three, Spike Island, Bristol and tour (2009-2010). Selected group shows include All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art, Venice (2015); Migrations: Journeys into British Art, Tate Britain, London (2012) and Sharjah International Biennale: 7, United Arab Emirates (2005). Boyce’s work can be found in public collections including Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Government Art Collection, British Council and the Arts Council Collection.
